23rd IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion, 7 - 11 April 2019, Rotorua, Aotearoa New Zealand

Hell's Gate Mud Spa

For more than 700 years, Rotorua Māori (Ngati Rangiteaorere tribe) have lived on this land and have treasured this special site as a place of healing and revitalisation. Here, warriors would bathe in the sulphurous waters to heal their wounds after battle and remove the “tapu” (sacredness) of war. Hell’s Gate encompasses the Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, a sulphur spa, a mud spa and traditional Māori massage therapy; for a unique cultural wellbeing experience.
