23rd IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion, 7 - 11 April 2019, Rotorua, Aotearoa New Zealand

Why You Should Attend

One People, One Health, One World
Our world is but one global home. You and I are its global citizens.
Let’s work together for our health, and for our home

The 23rd IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion will be an experience unlike any other conference you have attended. Here are our five top reasons for why you should attend:

1. Improving Health and Wellbeing of All People: This triennial conference is an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate the contribution of health promotion to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and further discuss how health promotion will continue to strive towards achieving the vision of a world where all people achieve optimum health and well-being.

The overall theme of the conference denotes one of the major challenges in health promotion: how to strike a sustainable balance between on-going development and the well being of our planet. In light of the increasing concerns about climate change, and the UN call for action on the SDG’s, it is imperative we continue to share and encourage open discourse on how we face key challenges.

2. Addressing Global Health Challenges from a Unique Viewpoint: New Zealand and the Pacific region has a great deal of learning to share from our experience in addressing the global determinants of health here. Located in the largest ocean on earth and a key part of the Pacific region, New Zealand has addressed pronounced and complex challenges to planetary health and sustainable development.

The health promotion approaches and practices by Māori, the indigenous peoples of New Zealand, are effective and unique, and offer a significant contribution, both to the on-going search for solutions to global health determinants and inequities, and to the development of the health promotion discipline itself.

The New Zealand and Pacific health promotion sector and workforce is eager to share and learn. Our region can contribute examples of national and regional solutions with potential to benefit communities around the world.
3. Walking the Talk: Rotorua has been selected to host the 23rd IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion because of its unique cultural heritage. It also offers a showcase of socio-economic development initiatives that enhance sustainability, the holistic health and wellbeing of the whole community and their built and natural environment.

In addition, the location will provide a wonderful opportunity to engage in leisure and physical activity during the Conference. From utilising the beautiful park walkways and green spaces which link the various venue spaces to engaging in various interactive sessions offered such as Tai Chi, low impact sport, touch rugby demonstrations and mindfulness activities.

Between sessions delegates will have an opportunity to participate in Māori cultural activities including weaving, song and dance, and traditional physical activity.

4. Leave a Lasting Legacy: While the primary aim of the conference is to enhance the exchange of knowledge and professional networking, an equally important outcome will be the long lasting initiatives implemented to continue Rotorua’s quest to become a healthy city.

You can be assured your attendance at this conference will contribute to the creation of an exemplary and durable legacy to enhance health and sustainable development initiatives for the city and people of Rotorua.
